Pay it forward...

I was just thinking about something that happened the other day.  It was just before the Great Chicago Snowpocalypse of 2011, and I had gone down the slick stairs into the Red Line subway downtown.  As I approached the machine to check and add funds to my card, a guy at the other machine said: "I don't think that one is working."  It looked like he was just about done with his so I waited.  The machine beeped and he took his card and stopped for a second.  He held out his hand with two singles in in and said: "Here take this."  I was a little bewildered and he said: "I found some money here in front of the machine.  Someone must have accidentally dropped it.  Take this and apply it to your fare.  I'll feel better about it."  I agreed and off he went.  It just gave me a little pause.  It isn't something you expect in a city subway, or many other places.  So of course a few extra straggling dollars made their way into the cup of a man sitting in the snow on the corner.  Funny how little things can stay with you and make a difference in your day.
